Aim

In the context of serious or life-threatening illness/frailty, this evidence-based and experiential learning advanced communication skills course aims to provide opportunity to:

  • Explore, share and develop skills, knowledge and confidence in managing aspects of communication in practice that can often feel, challenging or complex
  • Examples might include: information giving (tailoring information to individual need, giving complex information, communicating decisions, breaking bad news); responding honestly and openly to people’s expectations; responding to people who are distressed, including anger

Target Audience

This course is suitable for any senior health or social care professionals (i.e. Nursing/AHP Band 6 & above, Junior & Senior Medical Roles, Social Workers) whose roles involves difficult or complex conversations as part of assessment or other consultations in the context of serious or life-threatening illness/frailty

(in view of COVID-19 current measures, the actual timing layout of this course is under review. It will aim to be a mix of on-line resources involving independent reading and reflection and live on-line video/audio classroom discussion)

Content

  • Considering the evidence-base to why and how specifics of a person-centred approach to communication can enable effective communication and positively influence outcomes
  • Reflecting on what are the communication situations felt to be challenging or complex in practice
  • Identify communication behaviours known to hinder, and those known to help, the effectiveness of communication
  • Opportunity to gain knowledge, confidence and skills of helpful approaches/strategies by working on individual challenging communication aspects, as part of facilitated role-play supported in small groups.
  • Pre-course: provision of pre-course workbook
  • Post course on completion: provision of a handbook and a Certificate of Attendance
